Portland’s history begins far before American settlers ever reach the end of the Oregon Trail. It has been inhabited by the Upper Chinook tribe and other Native American groups. These tribes would trade fish, berries and roots with others.

The area that became the city was originally called Stumptown along the bank of the Willamette River. In 1843 a man named William Overton wanted to file a land claim. He worked with a partner, Francis Pettygrove. The two men could not decide what to name the new city. They settled it with a coin toss. Pettygrove won the toss and named the town after his hometown in Maine.

Portland was incorporated as a city in 1851. Property rentals in Portland will put you up close and personal with Oregon’s unique history.

Parks and Recreation

There is a reason Portland is called the “City of Roses.” It is full of gardens, including the International Rose Test Garden. This was all part of John Charles Olmsted’s plan established in 1903. The city of Portland also chose to set apart additional natural areas for wildlife in 1995. Today, the city has thousands of acres of natural areas.

Mill Ends Park is the smallest park in the world, taking up a diameter of just two feet. The Oregon Zoo and Portland Japanese Garden are a part of Washington Park.
